How to work with a Library in Illustrator

Libraries can speed up your workflow as you can import your most important visuals to avoid opening up the same files over and over again. For products like our “Ultimate Shape Box” you have the option to do exactly that.

After you’ve installed a Library in Illustrator, follow these steps:

To place a linked item (will automatically update after you’ve edited the source file):

1

Right-click on the item and select “Place linked”.

2

Click on a random place on your artboard to place the item.

3

To detach it from the source file, select it and click on “Embed” in the Control Bar.

To place a copied item (will be detached and can be edited directly):

1

Right-click on the item and select “Place copy

2

Click on a random place on your artboard to place the item.

That’s it! Now you can just drag and drop visuals right from your Library. You can also directly search for a shape by typing the name into the “Search all libraries” field to search in all your installed brushes, or in the “Search current library” field when you’re already inside a Library.
